FCC Construcción featured in the CEOE’s Best Practice catalogue

FCC Construcción and its project “Sustainable Infrastructure Model – VeenIX A9 BAHO” are featured in the CEOE’s Best Practice catalogue. The A9 motorway project in the Netherlands, where FCC Construcción is acting as the main contractor, is characterised by its high standards of sustainability.

To meet these requirements, the company has implemented various initiatives aimed at progressing towards the established environmental objectives. These measures are based on the integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the impact of the materials used. After identifying those with the greatest environmental impact, a specific LCA is being drawn up for each one, which will subsequently be verified by accredited specialists. To achieve favourable results, work is being carried out along two main lines:

  • Supplier selection, requiring detailed information on the environmental impact of materials, including their Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which has become a key criterion for procurement.
  • Optimisation and reuse of resources, through the implementation of measures that encourage the use of existing materials within the project.

Within this framework, FCC Construcción has promoted the reuse of concrete and steel beams from demolition sites, the recovery of structural elements such as sheet piling and anchors, the production of concrete using recycled aggregates, and the preservation of the topsoil. Thanks to these actions, more than 300 concrete beams have been recovered, avoiding the production of new units and significantly reducing the associated environmental impact.
